Breaking the Silence, Building Connections, and Saving Lives Through Compassion and Community
At Elysian Integrative Health and Wellness Group, we believe that mental health is a community effort. September marks Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, a time to break the silence, increase understanding, and help save lives through awareness, compassion, and action.
Understanding Suicide: The Urgent Need for Awareness
Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States, with more than 48,000 Americans lost each year—one every 11 minutes (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2023). While the reasons behind suicide are complex, risk factors include mental health conditions, substance use, trauma, chronic pain, and social isolation. Stigma and lack of access to care often prevent those struggling from seeking help.
Recognizing Warning Signs and Risk Factors
Awareness saves lives. Recognizing warning signs empowers us to intervene and offer support. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP, 2024), warning signs include:
- Talking about wanting to die or feeling hopeless
- Withdrawing from friends, family, or activities
- Changes in mood, sleep, or eating habits
- Increased use of alcohol or drugs
- Giving away possessions or saying goodbye
- Sudden sense of calm after a period of distress
The Power of Connection: Steps You Can Take
Research shows that connectedness, feeling supported by family, friends, or community can reduce the risk of suicide (CDC, 2023). Here’s how you can help:
- Reach out: If you notice someone struggling, ask how they’re feeling. Listen without judgment.
- Encourage professional help: Suggest connecting with a mental health provider or calling or texting the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988.
- Remove lethal means: If someone is at risk, help reduce access to firearms, medications, or other means of self-harm.
- Stay connected: Follow up and offer ongoing support.
Strategies for Prevention: What the Research Shows
Evidence-based interventions can make a difference. According to a 2023 study by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH):
- Brief interventions (such as safety planning and follow-up calls) after emergency department visits reduce repeat suicide attempts (Stanley et al., 2023).
- Access to mental health care, including both in-person and telehealth options, is crucial.
- School- and community-based prevention programs help reduce stigma and connect people to resources.
